Have you ever taken a career test?

Have you ever taken a career test? Do you remember your results?

Do you remember taking any career assessments during your college or university days? Can you remember your results?

My good friend, Laura Churchill Duke, recently recounted her story about career testing on Facebook and she gave me permission to share it with you. Laura wrote:

In 1995, during university, I completed the Strong Campbell Inventory to find out what career I would be best suited for. I subsequently filed it away, and last week my dad and I were talking about the test. I went and got it to look at again, not having looked at it in over 15 years.

My top jobs?
Public Relations Director
Broadcaster
Advertising Executive

Exactly what I am doing today!

Great story!

Not all of us end up like Laura -  in exactly the careers suggested by our Strong Campbell results. But I bet many of us ended up in a field of study or a career grouping that was strongly suggested - or at least made the list.

Unlike Laura, I don't have my results carefully filed away but I remember the fields of psychology, teaching, writing and art being quite high on the list. I've done all those throughout my career; however, I also seem to remember that "farmer" was also listed. I'm not sure my flower garden counts!

I would love to hear your stories! Do you remember your results? What are you doing now? Was it a match or a complete miss?

Would you like to take an updated version of the test Laura took? Keep reading.

Career Testing

Career testing can be a helpful resource for choosing careers or making a midlife career change.

While there is no career test that can tell you exactly which career will bring you sunbeams of happiness and buckets of riches for life, a well researched career assessment, combined with a professional feedback session to fully interpret the test results, will give you valuable insights into your personality, interests, work strengths and career possibilities.

Career and personality tests also give you positive words to describe yourself. This language can be useful in describing your strengths and positive attributes on resumes and during job interviews.

Many of us have trouble answering questions like “What are your best qualities or skills?” or “ Tell me why I should hire you.” A good personality assessment will give you the specific language you need to answer those questions. You can add those glowing phrases to your resume and your LinkedIn profile.

Plus - career and personality tests are a lot of fun to take and talk about!

Want to try one? Here's your chance!

Take a look at a few of the possibilities:

Strong Interest Inventory®

We offer an updated online version of the Strong Campbell that Laura took 15 years ago. With decades of dedicated research, the Strong Interest Inventory® is a gold standard assessment. The Strong Interest Inventory offers insight into your interest in 5 Career Areas - Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional - and identifies potential careers for consideration.

Myers Briggs Career Report®

Another option is the official Myers Briggs Career Report (not an online knockoff) which combines the MBTI personality inventory with well researched career options and information.

We offer two extra options for high school and college/university students.

iStart Strong®

The iStart Strong is an online interactive version of the Strong Interest Inventory mentioned above. It's an excellent choice for high school students and helps identify fields of study and particular areas of interest, along with hyperlinks to the related occupations in the O’Net Database, a broad listing of careers with educational requirements and salary guidelines.

SOAR™ Student Occupational Assessment and Report

For a comprehensive assessment, try SOAR® - available only at Blue Sage Career Strategies. SOAR™ combines the Strong Interest Inventory and MBTI Career Report (High school or College editions) with the Blue Sage Career Values and Work Environment Questionnaire. It’s one of the most comprehensive career assessments for high school and college students available anywhere.

Plus all assessments (except iStart Strong) include at least a 30 minute feedback session with me. So you get to talk to me too!
